Lula Asks God to Stop Flooding

President Lula of Brazil has made a plea to God in order to stop the rains which have been devastating parts of his country. He stated "We're only asking God to stop the rains soon so that we can start to rebuild the state of Santa Catarina". He also called for reparations for thousands of people who have been affected.

Brazil and Russia Want Talks with Asian Giants

In what could indicate the beginning of an era with a new global "financial architecture" Russia and Brazil have called for talks with their counterpart emerging markets, India and China. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has agreed to host the summit in 2009 which will see the countries draw up new plans for economic cooperation. The move comes as the countries increasingly become major economic players on the world stage.

Brazilian Conference Highlights Child Abuse Problem

UNICEF's third World Congress Against Children Sexual Exploitation has been held in Rio de Janeiro. Almost 3000 people represented 125 countries to discuss ways in which the horrendous issue of sexual exploitation of children can be solved. UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman stated that "Sexual exploitation leaves children with psychological and, at times, physical scars and diminishes their hopes of leading a life of dignity... No country or region is immune, and there are no innocent bystanders."

Coastal Rainforest to be Protected by Government

The Brazilian President has signed a decree that will protect areas of rainforest along Brazil's Atlantic coast. Just 7% of 500,000 square miles of original coastal rainforest remains standing, but the treaty will aim to restore up to 20% of this. The decree will provide financial incentives to local businesses with "green" policies.

Brazil Acts to Ease Farming Debts

The Brazilian National Development Bank has offered generous loans to farmers in order to help them to re-organize their debts. The bank will lend as much as 500 million Reais to farmers in the Centre-West region of the country. The government is currently looking into new ways to aid farmers suffering from dried up credit, a result of the ubiquitous financial crisis.

Brazil to use 'Heat Seeking' Sensors to Find Amazon Tribes

An Air Force Plane equipped with heat seeking sensors is to be used by the Brazilian Government in an attempt to save isolated tribes of Amazon Amerindians. It is hoped that the plane will be able to detect an estimated 39 groups of indigenous peoples who still live deep in the rainforest. With their location known it will be easier to protect these groups from loggers, gold miners and ranchers who are cutting down swathes of the Amazon at an alarming rate.

He claimed that the G8 group of the world's most powerful nations was now 'irrelevant' in a globalizing world where the voice of emerging markets cannot be ignored.

Brazilian Middle Class Hurt by Financial Crisis

Little credit, auto sales declines and unemployment are indicators that the economic crisis is hurting Brazil's middle strata, which had recently seen better living conditions. During the six years that President Lula da Silva has been in power, his social programs and a global commodities boom have helped millions rise out of poverty. Middle class people who are used to buying goods on credit are finding that companies are restricting this method of payment.

The Christian Science Monitor affirms that the US's president-elect and Brazil's leader, Lula da Silva, are similar in background and politics. They both come from a poor background and have been traditionally more leftist with their politics. For now, both are extremely popular with the citizens of Brazil and the US. Leaders of Brazil and Italy Discuss World's Economic Crisis

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil met with Italian President, Giorgio Napolitano during his three day official visit to Rome. The Brazilian President commented that the world economic crisis was an opportunity to create a world where social concerns were of greater value that economic speculation. Trade between Italy and Brazil has nearly doubled in the last five years.
